At the end of last century golf was already played in Montevideo. A small group of the English colony founded the first golf club home institution in the country to practice golf, the "Montevideo Golf Club", with an incomplete golf course homes and golf real estate in “Punta Carretas”, in the fields that were of Mr. Antonio María Marques. Of that epoch they remain memories and anecdotes and also the old "Cup Dewar", that was the first golf club trophy that was disputed in tournaments of golf in Uruguay. Donated in 1885, has engraving the names of the winners since the 1901. With the golf course of the time, the Montevideo Golf Club homes and golf real estate was transferred to the outskirts of the present north Cemetery, where had bought a field for the construction of a 9 holes golf course home.
In Montevideo the golf club home was almost unknow, until 1916 was practiced only by English residents and some of its descendants. Was in that year that a few Uruguayos join the golf club home and began to play it with great enthusiasm. Soon they felt out of environment in a net English club, the moment arrived that this Uruguayans wanted to have their own golf course home, their own golf club home and their own golf institution.
Was initiative of the Ing. Juan P. Fabini, enthusiastic golfer of that time, to talk directly with the Municipality and to request the administration of the golf course home that was being built in “Punta Carretas”. This occurred in the year 1921.
